Women's Wellness on Wheels (WOW)
The IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (COE), Women’s Wellness on Wheels (WOW ) Bus is a statewide outreach program to raise awareness and improve the status of women’s health in Indiana through education and screening. The program is designed to drive more women into local care, encouraging them to build relationships with providers close to their homes, thereby creating the patient-provider partnership required for optimum health. While on the WOW Bus, women (including teens) participate in an educational session and receive a free confidential mini-physical including height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, and glucose screen (parental consent needed for <18 years). Pregnancy testing is also available upon request. COE partnerships with local community and health care providers enables the COE to provide referral vouchers for additional low-cost services such as pap smears, mammograms and contraceptive care for women in need of those services. By partnering with the local public health departments, hospital health systems, medical societies, and other non-profit agencies, we are able to direct the women to health care in their own community. Each woman seen on WOW receives a free gift and additional information on issues of importance for women’s health including nutrition, smoking cessation, mental health, domestic violence, and alcohol and drug abuse. WOW is staffed by a nurse practitioner and health profession staff including medical students. It is COE’s hope that not only will the health status of women improve, but the WOW outreach program will serve as a mechanism by which more women health profession students gain interest in devoting their careers, even in part, to the medically underserved and rural areas of Indiana.
